カハンカとは、サンフランシスコ川など大河が交通の中心手段である地域で航行する船の船首に飾る木彫りの像である。人間世界と神々をむすぶ使者とみなされ、神聖で神秘的な役割を担った。動物と人間のどちらともつかない相貌をもち、船舶とその乗組員を嵐や雨、稲妻や雷鳴、そして事故から守るとされた。河川輸送の衰退にともない、今日ではアート作品として制作され続けている。
Carrancas are wooden sculptures, which decorated the bows of the boats that circulated through large rivers, such as São Francisco river, in the regions where they constitute the main transportation means. Seen as messengers between the men’s and gods’ worlds, carrancas had divine and mythical assignments. With their ambiguous features, between the animal and the human, they were intended to protect the vessels and their crews from storms, rain, lighting and thunder, as well as from accidents. With the decline of the river transportation, they continued to be made, now as art.
Carrancas são esculturas em madeira, que ornamentavam as proas dos barcos que circulavam pelos grandes rios, como o rio São Francisco, nas regiões onde estes constituem o principal meio de transporte. Vistas como mensageiras entre o mundo dos homens e o dos deuses, as carrancas tinham atribuições divinas e míticas. Com suas feições ambíguas, entre o animal e o humano, destinavam-se a proteger as embarcações e seus tripulantes das tempestades, das chuvas, dos raios e trovões e, também, dos acidentes. Com o declínio dos transportes fluviais, elas continuaram a ser feitas, agora como arte.

メストレ（名人）・グアラニことフランシスコ・ビキバは、1884年にバイーア州サンタマリアダヴィトリア村に生まれた。大工と指物師の助手として木の扱いを学んだ。教会の祭壇や家庭祭壇を制作したが、仕事が少ないため辞めた。水桶や家具の制作、屋根の骨組みの組み立てなど様々な仕事に従事した。1901年に船の建造に携わり、船首像を彫り始めた。彫刻作品にF・グアラニーと銘を入れるようになったのは1963年以降。最も優れた船首像彫刻家と認められている。高齢になるまで働き、1985年に101歳で没した。 Francisco Biquiba, Mestre Guarany, was born in 1884, in Santa Maria da Vitória village, in Bahia. He learned to deal with wood as a carpentry and joinery assistant. He carved altars for Churches, and small domestic oratories, but he left the activity due to the lack of sufficient work in such area. He was dedicated to many types of services: he built wooden barrels for water transportation, made furniture, installed timber roofs, etc. In 1901, upon participating in the construction of barges, he started the sculptures of carrancas to the vessels. It was only in 1963 that he started to assign names to his sculptures, signing them as F. Guarany. He is recognized as the most important artist in such specialty. He worked until very old. He died with 101 years old, in 1985. Francisco Biquiba, o Mestre Guarany, nasceu em 1884, na vila Santa Maria da Vitória, na Bahia. Aprendeu a lidar com a madeira como ajudante na carpintaria e marcenaria. Entalhou altares para Igrejas e pequenos oratórios domésticos, mas deixou a atividade por falta de trabalho suficiente nessa área. Dedicou-se a muitos tipos de serviços: construiu barris de madeira para o transporte de água; fez móveis; instalou madeiramento para telhados; etc. Em 1901, ao participar da construção de barcas, deu início às esculturas de carrancas para as embarcações. Foi somente a partir de 1963 que passou a atribuir nomes às suas esculturas, assinando-as F. Guarany. É reconhecido como o mais importante artista nessa especialidade. Trabalhou até bem idoso. Faleceu com 101 anos, em 1985.
