Work Details

Concept and Intention of the Artwork

Rather than creating “shapes” from scratch, I create by selecting shapes that already exist and changing the way I look at things. This time, we are introducing the “Folded Box Shape” series as one such method. This series was exhibited at the University of Tsukuba graduation exhibition.

The motifs of this work are all ready-made assembled paper boxes. When I looked closely at the prefabricated paper box, I unexpectedly noticed adorable shapes lurking in the insert part, handle part, etc., and this series was born. While taking advantage of the original creases, it is folded in a direction different from the original way it was assembled, and eventually it is folded until it has a generally rectangular shape. Then, I paint them in two different colors with acrylic gouache according to the front and back of the box and draw on the canvas.

These abstract shapes were not created by me from scratch; they were selected from ready-made paper boxes. Paper boxes exist for the purpose of “putting things in,” but when you look at them according to their purpose, it's hard to notice the shape itself. However, once you step away from that purpose and look back at it as a means to create shape, you notice that a unique appeal is hidden within the structure. Even though there are certain structural rules, the types and dimensions are only slightly different, and the shapes are surprisingly diverse and unique.
