運動習慣のない私がスポーツと聞いて思い出すのは体育の授業である。
そこには何か強制めいた、気怠い空気が漂っていた。体力テストに対し全く気乗りしなかったのは言うまでもない。特にシャトルランはやりきれなかった。走ることによって何処かに到達できるならまだしも、一切の前進も後退もなく、同一線状を往復し続けることには徒労感が募った。しかも、警笛じみた無機質な合図音は刻々と早まっていく。処置に間に合わなければ爆発してしまう時限爆弾の導火線のように、それは焦燥感を掻き立てた。
2017年8月、蒸すような猛暑の中、神宮外苑へと足を運んだ。新国立競技場の建設現場には幾台ものクレーンが林立していて、青々とした空に幾重にも伸びた赤い鉄尖が突き刺さっている。
仮設のレガシー。
ふとシャトルランが脳裏をよぎった。
前進のない終わりなき反復も、加速度的に迫るタイムリミットも、じりじりと積もる焦慮も、疲弊も、今私たちの眼前に広がっているものではないか？……
さらに、2年後の8月、ほとんど完成した競技場を尻目に、全く同じ場所で、同じ行為を再撮した。
むろん、シャトルランは単なる持久力測定テストであり、オリンピック種目ではない。
