Pope Bacay
Artist
Pope Bacay’s (b. 1994) paintings explore the idea of home through fragments of architecture and shifting landscapes. His works draw on the houses he has lived in and the places he has passed through, transforming windows, rooftops, tiles, and horizons into contemplative images. Sometimes precise, sometimes intuitive, these forms become vessels for memory and belonging, suggesting that place is less about geography than about sensation and recall.

Profile
Biography
Pope Bacay (b. 1994), born and raised in Roxas, Oriental Mindoro, later moved to Manila with his siblings, where frequent relocations shaped his view of home as situational, defined more by comfort than permanence. He graduated cum laude in Studio Arts (Painting) from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2015 and is now based in Manila.
Since then, he has presented his work in solo and group exhibitions locally and abroad. His exhibition Viewfinder (Tin-Aw Art Gallery, 2018) examined windows as carriers of narrative, while Lures from the Other Land (Artinformal, 2022) featured Lucy’s Land, his largest work to date, based on his grandmother’s farm. His recent solo exhibition How to Move Beyond the Landscape (Finale Art File, 2025) expands this exploration into panoramic canvases that merge personal memory with broader, imagined terrains.
Bacay’s practice continues to grow more personal, blending fragments of architecture, landscape, and absence into images that hold both intimacy and openness. His paintings invite viewers to find their own sense of belonging in the everyday, elevating ordinary forms into spaces of memory and contemplation.
