Schillerstraße (Frühnebel)

Nao Kikuchi's ceramic works embody the images she collects while walking through public spaces, primarily in Germany, where the artist is based. The spatiality of architecture is reinterpreted through the processes of photography and drawing, creating fragmented structures that are not immediately recognisable as a whole. She sees her exploration of architectural ornamentation which embraces regionality, history, and craftsmanship, as an investigation of visual language to express non-verbal narratives within the context of contemporary art. In particular, she has focused on the boundaries

that separate spaces, such as windows and fences. These motifs suggest “open portals” to other worlds and reflect her longing for distant places. The titles of some of her works are named after real places, referencing her physical footprint.
