私は、かつて東洋の魔窟と呼ばれた九龍城砦の画像を目にすると、懐かしさと高揚と、胸の奥深くで疼くような戦慄を感じます。
快感と不快感が混じった、この奇妙な感覚を知ったのは、小学生の頃、兄の机に無造作にあったプレイボーイ誌(だったと思う)で、この魔窟の内部の様子が、特集記事で掲載されていたのを目にした時です。
野放図に増築を繰り返して出現した、巨大な生き物のようなビル群に目を奪われ、その内部に充満して蠢く混沌と生気が、誌面から立ち上ぼり、肌に触れ、呼気に混じったような気がして釘付けになりました。
私が実際に変換前の香港を訪れたのは、たった一度きり、20代の頃、会社の団体旅行でのことで、勿論、九龍城の付近に近づくこともありませんでした。
時々、私が無性に街の絵を描きたくなるのは、不完全燃焼なあの奇妙な感覚を再確認して、咀嚼し、放出するためなのかも知れません。
