1945年の大爆撃により日本一の被害を受け町のほとんどが焦土と化した。

1946年、浜松の街をけたたましい音を立てて自転車が走った。乗っているのはモンペ姿の女性で、後部には湯たんぽが取り付けられている。これが、本田宗一郎が作った最初の製品である。焼け野原の中でこのエンジン付き自転車は大人気となり、爆音のうるささから“バタバタ”と呼ばれるようになった。
