Waiting for the day you smile again

This copperplate print pays homage to the "Hundred Faces" from Hokusai’s Manga series. I was drawn to the universal humor expressed through the simple subject of human faces, which led me to choose it as my motif.

Looking at these faces—which never fail to bring a smile to one's lips—reminded me of my middle school days. At that time, going to school was so painful that I would cross out each day on my planner as it ended.

I imagined how much comfort it would have brought me if these hundred faces had been there in my calendar back then, waiting with me for the day when I could laugh again. This thought became the inspiration for this piece.

I wanted to create a work that stays by your side during difficult times, helping you find your way back to laughter. It is also an expression of my deep respect for Hokusai's masterful depiction of the human form.

This work was primarily created using a technique called "drypoint," in which lines are incised directly into the copper plate. I hope you enjoy the soft, velvety blurs and delicate textures that are characteristic of drypoint.
