CRACKS AND SHRINKS - VOLCA 005

サスティナブルという言葉で一括りにされ、責任の一端を担ぐことになったプラステック 。環境問題における負のイメージを払拭することは今後難しいだろう。身の回りのものが徐々に持続可能と言われるものに置き換わりつつある昨今、この流れが過剰に拡大し、生活の中にある大量生産され消費されるプラステックが生活の中に存在しなくなる未来を想像し、そのような状況下においてこそ生み出すことができる物はないかと試みた。

プラステックに対し消費される対象という概念が世界から消え、均質的生産性の呪縛から解放されたとき、純粋に素材としてプラステックは本来の姿を取り戻すことができるのではないだろうか。

これまで人が決めた形状に大量生産されてきたプラステックを、この素材が本来持つ原始的な性質によってそのループから外れたものを生み出せないかと実験を重ねた。生産時に施されるプラステックに対する生成や成形における温度や時間を見直し、素材にとって無理のない工程を行う事により、素材が本来持つ特性や現象により起こる変化を観察した。その結果、熱によって収縮する性質を持つ化学物質であるポリスチレンと、それに追随して縮みや割れを起こす二種類の水性塗料を使用。この物質はオーブンの温度 、ポリスチレンの厚みや発泡率、塗料の配分量、湿度や気温、空気に触れていた時間など、様々な要因によって自然物のように形態が変化する人為的操作の及ばない物質が完成した。

素材として人と関わるようになって半世紀にも満たないこの未熟な素材は、一度人の手から離れる事で消費の渦から解放され、プラスチックのネガティブな印象が忘れ去られた時、セラミックやガラス、金属のように純粋に素材としての新たな価値を見出すことができるのではないかと想像しCRACKS AND SHRINKS-VOLCAを制作した。

Plastic is a material that has always been associated with the word “sustainable” and takes the blame for being unsustainable. The negative impression of plastics as the pollution to the environment is hard to be erased even in the distant further. Nowadays, it is not hard to notice that plastic products have been gradually substituted by sustainable materials. As the scope of this trend going wider, it’s reasonable to imagine a future that people are no longer using mass-produced plastics for daily uses.

Imagine that plastic is free from its stereotype, when its prescribed destiny as consuming products disappears, the curse of homogeneous productivity would be removed, the real properties of plastic as a material could be revealed.

Up till now, plastic products are turned into mass production on the basis of human-designed shapes. Intended to break loose from this industrial loop, I did some experiments to see if new shapes could be produced based on properties that the material has by nature. Following the properties and formation of the material, I set the temperature and time as variables then carefully observed their transformations. Polystyrene, a heat-shrinkable chemical compound, and two types of water-based paints that can follow the reshaping of polystyrene are used for this exploration. By altering the variables such as heating temperature, thickness and density of polystyrene, amount of the pigment, humidity and room temperature, air exposure time of the material before the heating procedure, and so on, the material reaches the point that human manipulations fail to achieve, the form of natural objects.

Plastic is barely an underdeveloped material since it’s only been half a century that it comes into our daily life. Put aside the prejudice, let go of the economic merit it brought, and let the negative perception fade away. From artificiality to materiality, treating plastic like other materials such as ceramic, glass, or metal, focusing only on its material aspect. CRACKS AND SHRINKS is the outcome of changing perspectives that brings new value to plastic.
