What I paint is the body and its physicality through disorder and disability. It may be paraphrased as “inconvenience.” The opposite qualities of freedom and disability coexist in the body, and we live our days in between. I feel that this inconvenience is deeply rooted in human thoughts and actions.
In the Flawless Torso series, which has been in operation since 2024, production is carried out with a torso as a motif. A torso is a statue of a torso without limbs or head. It seems that beauty due to lack of it and imperfections that humans originally possess dwell at the same time. Unknowingly, our bodies are contrasted with perfection, and we aim for perfection. However, perfection is nothing more than an illusion, and we are swayed by that illusion. “Flawless” means “perfect,” but I wanted to express the fluctuation in interpretation of the body by daring to call the figure “perfect” even though it has omissions.
Every thought and action is limited by the very existence of the body. And it determines the way our world is. The moment we become aware of inconvenience, we have no choice but to face its limitations and possibilities in depth. A body that appears in front of us in a form different from what we had imagined. I want to paint the beauty, emptiness, and vividness that lurks within it.
