Annual Rings of Memory

Confronting the recent loss of a loved one, I felt a profound connection to the ‘memories of the soul.’ These memories, I realized, are like the rings of a tree, a record of our encounters and experiences. We are not isolated beings; we are shaped by the world around us and the relationships we forge. The ‘self’ is defined by these connections, and as they change, so do we. While we retain our core essence, each encounter, collision, intertwining, and separation leaves its mark, etching joys and sorrows onto our souls. Like the rings of a tree, these experiences form gaps, knots, and junctions, a testament to the passage of time and the ever-evolving versions of ourselves.

Selected First Runner-Up for the public exhibition “STEPPING INTO A WORLD III” hosted by Japan Contemporaries.

Artist

Kumiko Miyoshi
✔︎

Kumiko is a Japanese artist who embarked on her journey as an abstract painter in her 50s after working in the financial industry for nearly 30 years.

Her artistic concept revolves around the profound question, “What does it mean to live?” Her works translate intangible memories, emotions, and thoughts into visible forms, using elements of “nature” as metaphors on canvas. Her artwork is distinguished by its rich textures. Utilizing the impasto technique, she layers paint thickly, each layer representing the immense overlap of time and space. The drawing marks within these layers capture the invisible movements and connections of energy. These textured depths invite viewers into contemplation, drawing them into a deeper understanding of the visual dialogue she creates.
