2023 “Nature” Exhibition Statement

Most of my landscape paintings don't recreate specific locations.

I have my own body, find hand movements that fit perfectly, and the shape of the canvas, paint, color, and the fact that I'm drawing in the current era, the venue where it is exhibited, and these elements influence each other to create a landscape.

However, what is always at the beginning of production is the emotion from what I actually saw.

Comment from GALLERY ZERO

Although it is a small work, the intersecting strokes are fascinating. It is a picture with only colors with reduced brightness, but it is a work that shines surprisingly when displayed on a white wall. This is probably because the stability of the square canvas and the strength of the strokes moving outward the canvas give movement to the work.

ー About Yokono Asuka

Asuka Yokono was born in 1987 in Aichi, Japan, and completed her Master's degree in Fine Arts at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 2013. She lives and works in Nagoya, Japan. Asuka Yokono is a painter known for her powerful style of painting with vigorous strokes on canvas. At the “Whereabouts of Painting” exhibition held at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2014, which featured a group of up-and-coming young painters, she quickly attracted attention as “the artist of that dam! and attracted a great deal of attention. Her landscapes and still lifes, composed with speedy strokes of straight and curved lines and simple forms, give the viewer a pleasant sense of cleanliness and presence.

However, after the Corona disaster, she exhibited two large paintings depicting the Seto region at the International Art Festival Aichi 2022, and since then, we can see a change in her style. The experience of completing a large painting led to a search for a more optimal brushstroke that would express his inner self.

It must be about how one can establish on the canvas a vitality and presence that cannot be expressed by strokes alone. The “bouquet” and “rounded paper” presented here express a strange presence similar to that of the Meiji period painters Takahashi Yuichi and Kishida Ryusei. Yokono's honest exploration of painting is progressing slowly but surely.

Asuka Yokono was born in 1987 in Aichi, Japan, and completed her Master's degree in Fine Arts at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music in 2013. In recent years, he has created paintings with motifs of dams, landscapes, and still lifes. I'm interested in how people feel space when they look at things, and I express this using basic elements of painting, such as composition, how touch paint is layered, and color. 2022 “STILL ALIVE International Art Festival Aichi 2022” Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art, 2021 “Contemporary Art Positions 2021-2022” Nagoya City Museum of Art, 2014 “The State of Painting?” Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, etc.
