Work Details
This work is part of a body of work created for Masaki Okuten’s 2026 solo exhibition, “nowhere".
Rather than working toward a predetermined final image, Okuten develops his paintings improvisationally, responding to the changing state of the canvas each time he applies color or draws a line. Various traces produced through the layering of paint remain visible on the surface, and the work gradually takes shape through each successive move made in response to what is already there.
Okuten has never set out to depict a particular, concrete motif. At the same time, he has accepted that viewers may naturally find specific images in the finished paintings. In his 2026 solo exhibition nowhere, he maintains this approach while introducing a new perspective: that of “landscape.”
Here, “landscape” does not refer to the depiction of a specific, existing place. Rather, the colors and forms that emerge through the process of painting, together with the accumulation of multiple layers, come into view as a landscape through the viewer’s gaze.

Masaki Okuten was born in 1985 in Kanagawa, Japan. Works at the base in Tokyo.2012 BA, Oil Painting Course, Musashino Art University, Tokyo Masaki Okuten explores primitive themes such as the origins of line and the collective unconscious using painting and installation expression. Major solo exhibitions include "The nursery" (GINZA SIX Tsutaya book store 6F, Tokyo, 2021), "s.p.a.c.e" (Daikanyama Tsutaya book store, Tokyo, 2022), "Cut Back" (Gallery10 TOH, Tokyo, 2024) Group exhibitions include "When in Tokyo" (J12 contemporary art by Jason, Hong Kong, 2023), "Resusci-Anne" (Gallery Ether, Tokyo, 2022) "Crucial touch" (Gallery10 TOH, Tokyo, 2023), etc. He received the GEISAI#18 Holbein Prize (2013) and the 3rd D Art Biennial Excellence Prize (2014), among others.
