Work Details
The “apple” has long been portrayed as a symbol of desire, knowledge, and choice in various stories—from myths and fairy tales to contemporary culture. In this series, I use apples and characters to explore the emotions people encounter as they grow.
For this piece, I drew on my own memories of experiencing my “apple” and projected the version of myself from when I was taking piano lessons.
This oil-on-canvas painting features a composition in which a single leg appears to float in space, with an apple resting on its knee in perfect balance. The bold arrangement, reminiscent of Surrealism, is set against a vivid pink background. The sophisticated contrast between the red of the shoe and the apple—both in the same color family—lends the painting a strong pop aesthetic and a contemporary graphic sensibility.
The artist uses gradients to distinguish between the soft shading of the skin and the lustrous sheen of the apple and shoe.(Curator’s Comment)
