This exhibition “Play of Images” is a two-person exhibition exploring how images overlap, expand, and are structured while taking on movement within paintings through works by Manami Azuma Tomoe.

Although both works have different visual languages at first glance, they resonate in that they construct a painting space by overlapping multiple times, perspectives, and materials rather than establishing a screen as a single moment or fixed image.

Using the motif of “rotation” as a starting point, Azuma Manami incorporates invisible elements such as time and motion as the structure of her paintings. Production begins by shooting while rotating the figure on a turntable, and by reconstructing multiple moments extracted from there, the continuity of time and movement of viewpoints are incorporated into one screen. Images such as overlapping afterimages do not present a single image of the target, but rather fix the trajectory of motion and the accumulation of time on the screen as a visual rhythm. This structure can also be said to be a visualization of movements attempted by futurists and a reinterpretation of cubist multiviewpoints within a modern sense.
Meanwhile, Momoe's works lightly expand the form of painting by combining character images with everyday materials. When yarn, wood, familiar materials, etc. are taken into the screen, a flat image intersects with a material presence, and the painting acquires a spatial expanse that is not limited to a simple visual image. The characters appearing in her work function as intermediaries that go back and forth between the inside and outside of the screen while incorporating everyday senses and humor, creating new relationships between images and matter.

What is important in this exhibition is not to contrast the two expressions due to formal differences such as digital/analog or abstract/character. Whereas the east constructs the structure of images through repetition and rotation of time, Momoe expands the realm of painting outward by combining materials and images.
In either case, the image does not exist alone, and different elements overlap to form a new relationship. The experience of going back and forth between the works of Manami Azuma and Tomoe will be an opportunity to reimagine a painting not as a static visual image, but as a place where multiple elements such as time, material, and point of view are intertwined.

This exhibition is an attempt to show the flexible possibilities that the medium of painting still has, using the overlapping and expansion of images developed within the screen as clues.
