Work Details
I believe that an “initial impulse” emerges in the sketches and drawing lines created when depicting the human figure.
In the Initial Impulse series, I create works by tracing impulsively captured lines—sprayed with acrylic—using oil pastels and oil bars.
Emotions that move back and forth, up and down, left and right in accordance with one’s actions take the form of flat yet three-dimensional, dynamic flowing lines. In a world dominated by efficiency and shortcuts, I believe it is essential to cherish the “initial impulse,” the very origin of action.
Acrylic spray is used to output imagery without time lag, while oil bars and oil pastels are chosen for their ability to evoke memories of childhood.
The countless lines drawn through these materials eventually coalesce into the shape of a human figure. Is this not similar to the way self-consciousness is formed through a series of lived experiences?
The Initial Impulse / Close Up series builds upon the previous Initial Impulse works, while focusing on a single extracted section of a figure composed of countless lines. In this series, the lines are simplified and condensed into a more impulsive expression.
The uniquely shaped canvases used here are also a deliberate choice: each unintended form is created to invite new impulses, and paint is applied directly onto the canvas without preliminary sketches.
