Carving of a marriage

About the work: In vigorous wooden trunks, the artist combines two- and three-dimensions, dissolving the contours between painting and sculpture.Influenced by the universe of carving and xylograph, he works the surface of wood, also overlaying different themes, where the animal world and the narrative scenes live together, where the daily life and the festivities are celebrated.

João Cosmo Félix was born in 1920, in Juazeiro do Norte, in the countryside of the State of Ceará. After carving figures in wood, he worked in sugar cane mills, and was a blacksmith. Returning to the sculpture work, he developed an original style, which impact is in the very personal interpretation of the daily life and of the imagination connected to the popular feasts and myths. He starts producing toys, especially monkeys with rope-made tail. Later, he passes to the construction of large “dummies” representing human figures connected to the cangaço (“social banditry” in the Northeast of Brazil) history. Currently, he approaches diversified themes, and in his sculptures, made in vigorous trunks, the recurring forms of animals (birds, fish, horses, goats, etc.) stand out, as well as characters and scenes of reisado (a popular folkloric dance). He paints details or the entire piece using contrasting colors in oil paint.
