Kataoka Yukari (Yukari KATAOKA)

Born in 1982 in Hiroshima. He learned calligraphy from age 4, and has been familiar with expressions created by brush movements, rhythms, and body movements since childhood.

Since then, she has been involved in milestones in people's lives as a wedding planner, and has explored relationships between body, movement, material, form, and function as a women's shoe designer. Experiences in different fields have led to a deepening interest in people's bodies, senses, and visible and invisible things.

In 2012, he began drawing with pencils and drawing freehand. Starting from the intuitive act of drawing a line, my interest gradually expanded to the relationship between body movement and breathing, and the senses created there and time. I will start full-scale painting production in 2024.

Currently, I mainly use colors and lines, and I create works on the theme of traces left by breathing.

Breathing has a different rhythm every moment, even though it is constantly repeated. With shallow breathing and deep breathing, the world that can be felt through the body is different, even when standing in the same place. In production, we focus on our own breathing and body movements, and replace the sensation that occurs at that moment with color, brushstrokes, and the density of the screen.

There, coincidences born unexpectedly intersect with choices based on one's own will. By focusing on breathing in silence and superimposing minute changes that occur through the body on a screen, they are searching for traces of existence invisible to the eye.

I think painting is also an act of confirming the time one is living. Existence is not fixed; it is constantly changing. I'm trying to scoop up the signs, margins, and faint sensations that appear in the midst of that transition and keep them on the screen.

While putting the desire to touch something that cannot yet be named in words at the root of the production, I hope that throughout the work, the breathing and signs that certainly existed at that moment will quietly resonate with the memories and senses of each viewer.
