Shiyuh Furukawa

He began practicing calligraphy at the age of eight. Rooted in traditional calligraphy, his practice explores the boundaries between text and abstraction, tradition and contemporary expression.

Beyond the visual qualities inherent in written characters, he incorporates spontaneity and physicality into his work, pursuing forms of expression that transcend the conventional boundaries of calligraphy.

Alongside his artistic practice, he creates logos and title lettering for companies and brands, provides works for television dramas, commercials, and films, and collaborates across a wide range of fields, including retail spaces, products, architecture, fashion, and music.

In parallel with his creative practice, he is also committed to education in calligraphy and sumi. Through workshops and classes, he shares the possibilities of calligraphy and ink, ranging from traditional techniques to avant-garde calligraphy, sumi art, and contemporary artistic expression.

Viewing calligraphy as a form of contemporary expression, he continues to expand its possibilities across art, design, space, fashion, film, and music, while exploring new forms of calligraphy and sumi for the present day.
