Tenaga of Tōyama

I often uses motifs of Ashinaga-tenaga (足長手長）, "Long Legs Long Arms" are a pair of yōkai in Japanese folklore in my works.

The relationship between Japanese mountain folklore and Ashinaga-tenaga is deep. Sometimes they are depicted as giants living in the mountains, and sometimes there are legends of high priests sealing Ashinaga-tenaga as proof of their pioneering work in the mountains. In the tea ceremony, the term "Tōyama" is used to describe a tea pot or bowl that resembles the shape of a mountain in the distance. The motif of Tōyama's Ashinaga-tenaga were used in Yoichi Ochiai's exhibition in Yamanashi (Resonance of the Null: Interconnected Emptiness in Digital Nature), in which he created an image of the Ashinaga-tenaga motif using generative AI based on his own sculpture of Ashinaga-tenaga. Although this motif is not a photograph, the visual is reminiscent of a Ashinaga-tenaga standing in a forest in the distant mountains, and it depicts a new sense of nature and a possible representation of nature. After crossing the border from sculpture to AI, the work was again fixed in material by platinum printing.
