Trial Hearing Series 《Kowairo》
The series of paintings on view in this exhibition, "Kowairo," is a series of paintings that attempt my own approach to the "city" by depicting the shadows that have fallen over the lives of people living in the city.
I went to court hearings many times to research for this work.
Arson, drug addiction, attempted murder, robbery, etc... When facing various cases, the one and only fact for me was the tone of voice of the witnesses and criminals who told the truth in the noiseless courtroom.
The tone of voice is quick and lisping, tearful, emotionless as they read out their apologies in a matter-of-fact manner. The voices were restrained and regimented, but the faintest of emotions leaked out.
Their "kowairo" reverberated within me, bringing unconscious color to the monochrome world of light and shadow.

“The fear of ‘not understanding anything’ makes me terrified, so I want to expose and uncover the ‘you’ standing right in front of me.”
This raw mixture of fear and desire toward genuine, life-sized communication is the root of my creative concept.
In my practice, while continuing to create works that deal with macro perspectives on society and the times, I have also begun to work on pieces that take my own extremely personal experiences and emotions as their motifs.
For example, just as both the time I spend time outside connecting with society and the time I return home to be alone in my room lost in thought are equally indispensable to me, in my creative process I feel like I’m constantly moving back and forth between micro and macro viewpoints. I feel that these different scales have recently begun to coexist naturally within me.
