Curator comments
Emika Hosoi’s works often combine the softness of velour fabric and industrial metal with the hard, rugged quality of metal fittings. Her works frequently incorporate bolts, nuts, and other functional hardware. Hosoi explains her use of such components as follows:
“When you see a sofa in a showroom, you naturally want to sit on it. When you see a handle, you imagine gripping it and lifting something; when you see a toggle latch, you imagine opening it. By attaching hardware that intuitively evokes a particular action, I want to bring the work closer to that kind of sensory experience, rather than presenting it simply as an artwork that must not be touched.”
In this way, Hosoi seeks to create objects that exist somewhere between artworks and furniture. Traditionally, paintings have often been installed on walls intended for viewing, while sculptures have been placed on pedestals for the same purpose. Hosoi, however, creates works that quietly camouflage themselves within everyday life.
Exploring the idea of “something that blends into its surroundings from a distance, but reveals itself as an alien presence when viewed up close,” her works are rich in ambiguity. With a clear understanding of established artistic traditions, she nevertheless slips deftly beyond them, emerging as a kind of game-changing artist.
Related works were exhibited in the drama “18/40: Dreams and Love for Two”
18/40: Two Dreams, Two Loves, starring Haruka Fukuhara and Kyoko Fukada in the lead roles, aired on TBS every Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. from July 11 to September 12, 2023.
The Chain Museum, which operates ArtSticker, served as the art supervisor for the series. Related artworks appeared in scenes set in the protagonist’s home, as well as in the final episode, during an exhibition organized by the company where the protagonist works.

Sculptor
Born in 1993. Completed an MFA in Sculpture at Musashino Art University in 2018. Combining ready-made components such as bolts and handles with materials including fabric, iron, and light, the artist creates works that move between sculpture and furniture. This practice reconsiders our relationship with familiar objects and spaces, testing the intensity of perception within everyday life. The artist calls this practice “STILLTHING” and is developing it as a new genre that extends beyond the frameworks of sculpture and furniture.
Selected solo exhibitions include “STILLTHING” at Esther Okada Art Gallery (2026) and “Yellow tower” at Shoonji Temple (2025). Selected group exhibitions include “Absurdists from the Ivory Tower” at BEAMS JAPAN and Isetan Shinjuku (2025). In 2023, the artist’s work was featured in the TBS television drama *18/40: Futari Nara Yume mo Koi mo*. In the same year, the artist was selected as a finalist for the sanwacompany Art Award / Art in the House 2023.
