加藤泉は、東京と香港を拠点に活動し、国際舞台で精力的に発表を行っています。もともと絵画を基本として制作していますが、2003年頃から木彫作品に取り組むようになり、現在はソフトビニール、石、布などさまざまな素材を使い、平面から立体まで幅広く展開しながら、人のかたちを手がかりに作品を発表しています。

「今回、石巻市稲井地区で採掘された稲井石を使った作品を発表します。僕自身が採石場で石を見立て、地元の石屋さんに協力してもらって積み上げた約3mの立像や横たわる像など、大小の石に現地で着彩していきます。それらの石作品は、津波で大きな被害を受けた南浜地区の、流されずに生き残った蔵の周りや室内に点在させて展示します」（加藤泉）

Izumi Kato is an artist based in Tokyo and Hong Kong. Since around 2003, Kato has developed a painting-based practice that also employs wood carving, soft vinyl, stone, and cloth to create works inspired by the human form. The work presented for the festival this year uses Inai stone, which Kato found at a quarry in the Inai area of Ishinomaki.

“I painted large and small stones on-site, including a statue lying on the ground and a three-meter statue of a standing figure, which I piled up with the help of a local stonemason. I will scatter and exhibit these stone works inside and around the warehouses that survived the disaster in Minamihama, an area severely damaged by the tsunami.” (Izumi Kato)
