ステイトメント｜Statement

私の作品は動物の擬人化です。彼らは人間のように考え、思い、過去を思い出します。絵を描くことは、自分自身と場所、時間、そして題材を結びつけるプロセスです。私の作品を通して、見る人が自分自身、今いる場所と過去にいた場所、過ぎた時間と現在について思いを馳せるきっかけになってくれればと思っています。

My paintings are personifications of animals. They think, wonder and reflect on things like humans do. Through the act of painting, I attempt to reconnect with myself, places, time and subjects. Through my work, I am hoping to evoke my viewer’s feelings and allow them to connect to their own versions of these selves, places, times and subjects.

ミニアチュールという絵画の形式は、インドにイスラム文化がもたらされた9世紀から細密な絵画としてムガル帝国において全盛期を迎えたが、このように大きな偶像の表現を規制されるという環境が独自の発展を遂げるという事例は数多くある。自由気儘が絶対ではなくさまざまな規制の中で育つこのような表現も実に魅力的なのだ。彼女はアメリカに住んでいたので、作品は時折クッキーの缶に10数枚を詰め込んで贈答品として京都に届けられた。それを馴染みの額装屋さんに持ち込んで小さなガラスケースに入れてアルトテックのギャラリーに展示している。不思議なペットたちが我々が馴染みの日常に引き込まれて時の経つのを忘れる経験を皆さんにも味わっていただければ嬉しい。

The form of miniature painting flourished in the Mughal Empire as highly detailed paintings after Islamic culture was brought to India in the 9th Century; there are many examples like this where environmental restrictions on large iconic expressions lead to original paths of developmant. These expressions that grow under various restrictions rather than freedom being absolute is also extremely attractive. Omotaka used to live in America, and so at times a cookie can with 10 or so of her works stuffed in would arrive in Kyoto as a gift. I would take these to a familiar picture frame shop, and have them put into a small glass case to be exhibited in Artothèque’s gallery. I hope you may also experience having a strange pet drawn into our daily life, and forget the passing of time.
