■Explanation of works by artists
Until now, I have depicted the flow of water as “something that circulates while changing.” The flow of water is invisible to the eye, and it is a motif for visualizing various changes and transitions in the world. The background of “Plurality 001-003 for Re Narrative” is a quote from Katsushika Hokusai's “Kokoku Waterfall Ciri”. Even in nature, waterfalls are a phenomenon that has the property of “maintaining the same appearance while constantly changing.” It seems that in his later years, Hokusai faced the challenge of how to express nature, rather than simply capturing nature. I feel that the expressions of the numerous waterfalls shaped through Hokusai's eyes are changing the very “way we see” the waterfall when facing the actual waterfall.
The motif in the work is Shirasawa (a Chinese mythical beast who understands human language and is said to be familiar with everything). In his works up until now, Shirasawa has depicted it as an entity that symbolizes complex perspectives and thoughts, but this time, the concept of “pluralism (plurality)” is superimposed on it. We humans cannot live in multiple ring worlds (worlds of different perception) at once. Shirasawa is depicted in this work as a “place” that makes it possible to simultaneously capture events in a complex, multi-layered world that cannot be captured by a single thought. Shirasawa does not just observe the world, but appears in this exhibition as an entity that symbolizes the space itself where different perspectives and stories intersect and can coexist.
