This work was a re-showing of the work exhibited at Gallery Yuragi (Kyoto) in 2014 with additional stumps. The process of placing many stumps around the garden made it look attractive. By placing the stumps indoors as well, the boundaries between the inside, the garden and the outside premises weaken slightly, allowing our eyes to reach further out to the trees in the distance.

We could even call it borrowed scenery (or `Shakkei’ in Japanese, the art of borrowing background scenery into compositions).

廃材を集めて切断して設置するこの手法は、「庭」によく映えます。

解体された家屋から出た杉の丸太、台風が過ぎ去った後に神社で拾った折れた樹木、木工所の隅で処分を待っていた端材などを輪切りにして外に置いてみると、まるで木がそこに生えていたかのような景色が広がります。

続けて室内にも切り株を置くことにより、室内・庭・敷地外の境界線は少し弱くなり、遠くに実際に生えている木々にまで意識がいくようになります。このインスタレーションは「借景」と呼べるかもしれません。

ガラス面にリフレクションした切り株群を眺めていると、これらが打ち捨てられようとしていたものたちには見えないのです。
