19世紀に写真術が発明されてから、天文学の研究分野が飛躍的に発達した背景がある。写真を用いて星を手に取るように眺めるということ、それは天文学者が長年思い抱いていた欲望のように思えてならない。この作品は写真術が天文学にもたらした結実を、架空の天文学者「M」の軌跡を巡り表現し、制作したものとなっている。当時実際に使用されていた機材や写真乾板といった観測の痕跡、歴史背景を元にイメージを組み立て、彼がかつて観てきた天体や観測していた場所などを交えてフィクションの物語を紡いだ。過去に天文学者が写真に残した宇宙への探究心は知識の賜物として現在もなお我々に受け継がれている。

After the invention of photography in the 19th century, astronomical research made rapid progress. This is because astronomers, using photographs, could gaze at stars as if in their hands.
I can't help feeling this was the realization of a long cherished desire of astronomers. I produced this work as a way of expressing the benefits photography brought to astronomy by tracing the path of the fictional astronomer M. I assembled the images based on the historical context and vestiges of bygone astronomical observations – specifically the equipment and dry plates used in the day – and I pieced together a fictional narrative, mixing in the observation field and the heavenly bodies M had observed in the past.
The curiosity astronomers had about space that is preserved in photographs has been passed down to us today as a gift of knowledge.
