1971年東京生まれ。工業デザイナーとして活動後、インスティテュート・ロレンツォ・デ・メディチにて絵画を学ぶ。 Naoto Kawahara (Tokyo, 1971) is an artist based in Tokyo. After he worked as an industrial designer, Kawahara studied at the Lorenzo de Medici Institute in Florence. デューラー、バルテュス、クラナッハ、ドガ、ムンク、ボナール、ピーテル・クラースなどの西洋美術史における古典的作品よりイメージを引用し、モデルを変えて撮影した写真を元に、場面を再想定（リ・エンビジョニング）した絵画作品を数多く制作している。古典作品の主題を現代にも通用するイメージの元型に変換させることをテーマに作品を発表している。「Biennial of Painting / Biënnale van de schilderkunst」　Museum van Deinze en de Leiestreek、（デーンズ、2014年）、「The Figure and Dr. Freud」ハウンチ・オブ・ヴェニソン（ニューヨーク、2009年)、「Diana und Aktaion: Der Verbotene Blick auf die Nacktheit」クンスト・パラスト美術館（デュッセルドルフ、2008年）、「Attention to Detail」フラッグ・アート・ファウンデーション（ニューヨーク、2008年）などのグループ展に参加。タカ・イシイギャラリー（東京、1999、2001、2003、2005、2008年、2015年）、Zeno X Gallery（アントワープ、2007、2012年）にて個展を開催。 He has been creating paintings that reinterpret scenes extracted from classic masterpieces by artists such as Dürer, Balthus, Cranach, Degas, Munch, Bonnard and Pieter Claesz. Through such “re-envisioned paintings”, Kawahara pursues the theme of reflecting on archetypes of images valid today through old masters’ themes. He has participated in the group exhibitions, “Biennial of Painting / Biënnale van de schilderkunst”, Museum van Deinze en de Leiestreek, Deinze (2014); “The Figure and Dr. Freud”, Haunch of Venison, New York (2009); “Diana und Aktaion: Der Verbotene Blick auf die Nacktheit”, Museum Kunst Palast, Düsseldorf (2008) and “Attention to Detail”, The FLAG Art Foundation, New York (2008). His solo exhibitions have included Taka Ishii Gallery, Tokyo (1999, 2001, 2003，2005, 2008, 2015) and Zeno X Gallery, Antwerp (2007, 2012).
