Born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1975, Stefan Brüggemann creates works by using appropriation and wording to capture the contradictions of our current society, in which we are inundated with vast amounts of text via social media, mass media, and advertisements. Born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1975, Stefan Brüggemann creates works by using appropriation and wording to capture the contradictions of our current society, in which we are inundated with vast amounts of text via social media, mass media, and advertisements. He fuses theory with pop methods in what he refers to as “conceptual pop”, drawing predominantly upon ideas of post-structuralism, deconstructionism, and nihilism. Although Brüggemann’s works utilize tautology (the needless repetition of an idea, statement, or word)with the most minimal and basic words, their power lies in the ability to invoke individual interpretation within the cultural and political context of the artwork’s location. Brüggemann’s use of gold leaf, neon, and other materials aim to redefine techniques and materials within art, in the same way that we redefine words throughout the ages.In 2019 he held a solo show at the Pompidou Center, Paris, and in 2024 exhibited at the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City, continuing to expand the breadth of his projects worldwide.
