Art Museum

Overview

Takamatsu Art Museum, conveniently located adjacent to the central shopping district in the heart of the city, is a modern yet relaxing art spot, serving also as a "plaza" where citizens can freely gather and interact.

The museum’s collection includes over 1,800 works (as of June 2026), systematically acquired around three core pillars: "Post-War Contemporary Japanese Art," "World Art of the 20th Century and Beyond (Prints)," and "Art of Kagawa (Crafts)." Highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad, our contemporary art collection is one of the finest in the country in terms of both quality and quantity. It forms a cultural platform (*1) and stands as a proud, living art archive (*2) in Takamatsu—a Creative City alive with the spirit of art, notably through events like the Setouchi Triennale.

While actively introducing diverse art forms and pursuing innovative initiatives, Takamatsu Art Museum also boasts a rich history. Shortly after World War II, in 1949, the museum was founded within the scenic Ritsurin Garden, pioneering the concept of regional public art museums in Japan. In 1988, coinciding with the opening of the Great Seto Bridge, it relocated to its current newly constructed facility in the city center.

Deeply cherishing our predecessors' passion for culture and the arts, Takamatsu Art Museum will continue to grow alongside the citizens and evolve with the times.

*1 platform = Originally referring to a railway platform, here it signifies a place or environment where people come and go and interact.

*2 archive = A repository or storage place for preserving important records.
